We've been giving a lot of thought to our navigation labels this year, and we realized that Articles was slightly misnamed, since it contains both articles and categories.
In the interests of making things clearer for brand-new authors, we've renamed that top-level label from Articles to Pages.
We know this is a big change since it's the top-level item everyone opens the most often, but we hope you'll forgive us for changing it since it does make it more descriptive.
New import options right on Pages
Previously, you needed to import content from Tools > Import, and the import was very much designed to import a lot of articles from other places.
We've now added a PDF importer and made some tweaks to our existing Word importer. Since both of these imports are often used to create a single article from an existing document, it felt weird forcing folks to go to Tools > Import to add them. So we've now added an Import option directly into the + Add menu on Articles Pages:
We've streamlined this import option so you can just drop the file you want to import and we'll give you options based on the file type.
New PDF import
Previously, if you wanted to import content from a PDF, you generally had to copy the content, paste it in, and hope it looked good. Talk about a tedious process!
We've added a new PDF importer that uses Owl Intelligence to extract the content from PDFs and format it for KnowledgeOwl. This has been a real game changer for our teammates doing PDF imports, and we hope it's similarly amazing for you!

Import to autogenerate URL redirects, extract content, and more
The Articles Pages importer can handle files in a few different ways:
- Embed: Uploads the file to your Files storage and creates a new article whose body includes a View or download file link to that file automatically. Available for all file types.
- Create a shareable link: Uploads the file to your Files storage and creates a new URL redirect article pointing to it. Available for all file types.
- Extract text options: For PDFs and Word documents, you can choose options to scrape and import the content from the files instead of uploading them to your Files storage, effectively migrating that content fully into KnowledgeOwl for further editing and maintenance. The exact options depend on whether you're uploading a PDF or a Word document. Refer to Import PDF documents and Import Word documents for more details on the options available and how to use them.
- Add to file library: You can also use this interface to upload files directly to your Files storage without creating an article or having to go to Files and uploading there.
We hope these changes help make Pages more of a one-stop shop and streamline you getting existing content or files into KnowledgeOwl!
